Hi Sir,

I'm doing Appadurai now and am typing the webwork typing the web work section by section already.

I was wondering why the pictures that I have uploaded to the files section of the page and inserted in the work do not come out. Every time I check the files in the file manager, the pictures are there and they show previews of it, but when I save my web work with the inserted pictures on it the pictures just appear as boxes with exes on them. How do I fix this problem?

Thank you.

Gershom Chua

Okay…

Perhaps this time I can consider two takes on Herman-Chomsky without cancelling one or the other. I do think you should try your hand at Appadurai though. Whatever happens anyway, I'll consider your Herman-Chomsky WebWork as part of your grade.

Technically, it can still be challenged though. But yeah, okay.

Sir, what happens if he doesn't post it there? I wouldn't want to resort to a challenge since it's already Friday and risk having someone's webwork cancelled. I'm trying to look into Appadurai but if I'd find it too hard to find examples for, may I go back to Herman-Chomsky? That is if you would allow us to have our webworks exist and considered at the same time.

Thank you.

Gershom Chua

Sir, I am about halfway through my webwork for herman-chomsky and since Luigi just posted his under edwardherman-noamchomsky I wasn't able to know that there already was a webwork done for said reading when I checked for available readings as recent as last Monday, 23 March 2009. Since I am already well into the reading, would you allow me to continue on with my webwork on the reading? thank you.

Sir, if you would much rather for the ease of communication, my cellphone number is 0926-6724082.

Thank you.

Gershom Chua

Mich, Javi, and Luigi: I've read your posts on the forum. Now create the actual page for the WebWork. (Luigi, fix the formatting of your paragraphs to make your submission easier to read.)

Again, a reminder to everyone: posting on the forum does not fulfill the online requirement. Creating (or editing) a page does.

When the embedvideo command asks you to "paste the html for the video here," you're not just meant to paste the URL but the really long series of characters that, on YouTube, begins with <object width="blahblah">…

You can edit your WebWork page by clicking on the lower-right-hand side of the screen.

I want to know how many COM105 students have still not chosen readings for their WebWork.

You need to carefully look at the pages that already exist, because not all of them are WebWorks. For example, some of the earlier assigned essays, like Hebdige and Habermas, are still not taken. The pages for those thinkers (and a few others) exist, because I was the one who created them for the purpose of sharing links. Obviously, it doesn't count as a WebWork unless a student does it, so they're up for grabs.

A student brought my attention today to the possibility that perhaps a reason why people have yet to do their WebWork is the fear that, owing to the competitive spirit of this requirement, one's efforts may end up a total waste if one picks a reading, is challenged by another student, and "loses" the challenge and, consequently, the page.

Let me say then that you will get points for effort for attempts to do the WebWork. You may end up "losing" pages left and right, but if at the end of the semester, you manage to "win" a page (at last!), then you get the points for that and your earlier attempts.

"You only have to win once."

We have, as of today, discussed 15 readings in class. Given that many of you are seniors graduating in March and will therefore end earlier than the others, the time has come for all of you to start thinking about that major class requirement called the WebWork.

You may have noticed that the first five readings in class have pages already devoted to them, as well as the the one for Dick Hebdige. Feel free to either edit those pages by adding more information to them or choose to create a page from scratch.

Whatever you decide, take note of the important thing: pick a reading for you to "own" by providing an example of a contemporary media phenomenon that can be understood with the application of the ideas found in the reading you have chosen. You must substantiate the example you've chosen with some kind of online resource (a news article,a blog entry, a YouTube clip, etc.).

Another student may then decide to "challenge" you for that reading by coming up with a "better" way to understand the reading. This may be done by providing a "better" (more appropriate) example or a better (more correct) write-up for that reading. (The write-up is where you defend your chosen example and why you think it helps to better understand the reading in question.)

Everyone else can comment and express their preference. This isn't a democracy though, and I won't precisely count votes. I will, instead, be like Caesar, providing the final verdict with a "thumbs-up" or a "thumbs-down" given my status as emperor teacher. Still, I will listen to the voice of the people, so I expect the others who are just watching the page become an arena to voice out their opinions.

For the moment, although this can change if things get chaotic, there is no limit to the number of challengers for each reading. Be aware, however, as soon as one person owns a page, that person's WebWork is already finished. The one who "lost" the page must thus find another reading to work on. (Graduating students must choose their reading and finish this assignment before their semester ends, of course.)

As I've already passingly mentioned in class, I envision this to be somewhat like Gladiator. I'd even call it Mediator, but that's not really accurate, I think. Or is it?

Any questions? And would anyone cringe if I also compare the WebWork activity to a cheesy film like Mad Max 3: Beyond Thunderdome? "Two (wo)men enter, one (wo)man leaves"?
